The allure of night proves an endless delight when Wordsworth's words are married to Redford's music in this probing triptych. Like a dark sea whose calm surface belies a roiling depth, these "Night Pieces" reflect the brilliance of their struggling moon with soaring melodies, while underneath, the water conspires, dashing the rocks only to recede in a wash of foam. The music serves the poetry in deliberate tones, now surging wildly, now ebbing gently. Unisons blossom into counterpoint, and harmonies signal a wavering between stable hues and changing moods. Rhythm follows suit between static stillness and ecstatic pulsations. (This piece, along with "Napili Bay, 2pm" (15/2322R) and other pieces by J.A.C. Redford can be heard on the recording "Evening Wind" by the Los Angeles Chamber Singers, Peter Rutenberg, Conductor. [Clarion Recordings CLR916CD]. Liner notes by Peter Rutenberg.)
