Level 2+ • In this fourth installment of the “Hymns We Love” series, six of your favorite arrangers apply their skills to the melodies and rhythms of the American spiritual. Because spirituals share roots with many popular music styles, you will find more than a touch of jazz in this collection, such as Mary McDonald’s swinging “Joshua” and a driving “Didn’t My Lord Deliver Daniel?” by Mark Hayes. But there is also a sensitive and beautiful side to this repertoire, as seen in Larry Shackley’s arrangement of “My Lord, What a Morning” and Lloyd Larson’s treatment of “There Is a Balm in Gilead.” As in previous volumes, each selection is introduced by a personal note from the arranger.
