Since 1977, the Oregon Bach Festival's Discovery Series of lecture-concerts has brought together musicians, audiences and student conductors in an exploration of music and meaning. Conductor Helmuth Rilling's concise lectures and illustrative examples have paved a road of understanding for a generation of student conductors and thousands of audience members, establishing the Festival as one of the nation's leading centers for choral-orchestral performance. In these volumes, Rilling's Discovery Series lectures are presented in print for the first time. Assembled and transcribed by Marla Lowen, they offer the insights of an internationally recognized Bach expert in a format suitable for both the lay listener and the professional musician.
